The St. Petersburg Bombing: What Do We Know?

the famous saint basil s cathedral in russia

On April 2nd, a bomb went off in a popular cafe in the second largest city in Russia, St. Petersburg. The explosion has been described as ‘domestic terrorism’ by Ukrainian officials and caused the injury of many, including the death of a popular Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky.

Vladlen Tatarsky was a pro-Kremlin (the centre for Russia’s government) blogger who backed the invasion of Ukraine, and also claimed to have fought in the war himself.

No-one knows (as of April 3rd) who is to blame for the explosion, but many reports say that the bomb was hidden within a present given to Vladeln. A year ago, he said while inside the Kremlin: “We will defeat everyone, we will kill everyone, we will rob everyone as necessary. Just as we like it.” Despite the statement, he had recently been openly criticising the Russian armed forces.

The Ukrainian government has not yet said anything in response to the allegations, but some people have been describing the act in many different ways, but on the whole they are effectively saying that unrest may yet again be rising in Russia.
